Republic Day Celebration, Interesting Facts about the Republic Day

The Republic Day, as celebrated in several countries in the world, is actually the day when they became ‘Republic’.  A nation is said to be Republic, if its citizens have all the powers and are allowed to choose a representative, such as a President, for themselves, either directly or indirectly. Republic Day of India is celebrated on 26th January, every year.

Every country needs some rules and laws to run and grow smoothly. And constitution is a set of fundamental principles or rules & laws according to which a state or other organization is governed. Therefore, the republic day holds a very special significance for all the people of India because on this day, the Constitution of India came into effect replacing the Government of India Act 1935 and India was proclaimed as a Republic.

Traditional Celebration of Republic Day

The official celebrations of republic day last for three days which start on the 26th January. On the first day, after paying homage to the martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate, our President reaches the Rajpath with the Chief Guest for the celebrations. He then hoists the national flag, after which our national anthem is sung and a 21-gun salute is given as the President’s Body Guards give the National Salute.

On this occasion, the President also presents the National Bravery Awards and a grand ceremonious parade which commences from Rashtrapati Bhawan, the residence of President of India. A ceremony called Beating Retreat marks the end of the celebrations on 29th of January. This year, the Chief Guest for our Republic Day celebrations will be Barack Obama, who will be the first President of US to attend the event.

Some Interesting Facts about the Republic Day:

  • Our constitution, though adopted on 26th November, 1949, was enforced on 26th January, 1950 because our leaders wanted to honour the date as India proclaimed Purna Swaraj on the same date in 1930.
  • On our first republic day, the Constitution was implemented at 10:18 AM on 26th January in 1950.
  • There were no parades held until the year 1955.
  • India’s major national awards (such as Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan) are awarded during the ceremony.
  • The tune which is played during the last ceremony, Beating Retreat is a Christian Song ‘Abide with Me’ which was a favourite of Mahatma Gandhi.

Tips to celebrate Republic Day with your family

  • Book your tickets in advance and go to Rajpath for witnessing the grand parade with your family.
  • Explain to your children the significance of this day and motivate them to take pride in being Indians.
  • Listen to and play some patriotic songs at home and help your children understand their meaning.
  • Search for some interesting facts about India, share them with your children and tell what makes our country special.
