Celebrate the National Science Day at home with your children

National Science Day is a day celebrated across the country to highlight the significant contributions made by various scientists to our nation. The day is celebrated specifically to honour the discovery i.e. ‘Raman Effect’ made by India’s leading scientist Dr. C. V. Raman on 28th February in the year 1928. Hence, since 1987, the Government of India has declared 28th February as the National Science Day. The basic aim of celebrating this day is to bring focus on the issues related to science and inspire the upcoming generation to work in the fields of science, technology and engineering.

National Science Day gives an opportunity to recall the contributions that science has made to our country that have led to the welfare of our society to a great extent. It is a theme based event and every year there is new theme associated with the celebration of National Science Day. The theme of the year 2014 is-‘Fostering Scientific Temper’.

On this day, various events such as-exhibitions, debates, seminars, lectures, quiz competitions are held across schools, colleges and other educational institutions. Besides this, all those who have accomplished great heights in the field of science are awarded prizes.

Listed below are a few tips to celebrate the National Science Day at home with your children:

• Tell your children about the role played by science and technology and its application in our day-to-day lives.

• Take this day as an opportunity to tell them about famous scientists such as Aristotle, Marie Curie, Isaac Newton etc. and the contributions made by them.

• Motivate your children to play science games, puzzles and quizzes.

• Encourage your children to make any science project such as-mini volcano using vinegar and baking soda, box guitar etc..

• Together with your children visit National Science Centre, Nehru Planetarium etc..

• Invite a Science lecturer to your society to throw light upon the role of science and motivate the young minds to opt for science as their career and contribute towards the growth & development of the country through certain inventions.

So, use the aforesaid tips to highlight the importance of science and technology & the significant contributions it has made in our lives.
