Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow;
And everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go.
It followed her to school one day,
Which was against the rules,
It made the children laugh and play,
To see a lamb at school.
Their are many claimants to who the original Mary was in
this poem. The most popular, one refers to a certain
Mary Sawyer, who nursed a sick lamb to health and as a
result the lamb followed Mary everywhere and became her
pet ! This poem is said to have been written by a lady
named Sarah Hale in 1830. The school referred to is the
Old Redstone Schoolhouse in Massachusetts (USA). it no
longer exists today.
