How To Handle Unacceptable
Behavior
In today’s materialistic world the race is on to possess
& accumulate material objects, which are both available
& accessible. The parents, more so the working ones, in
thin strong urge to make up for their unavailability /
low availability for so much of day, shower their
children wit gifts & treas. While this ay make the
parents feel better and somehow able to compensate for
their unavailability/ low availability it sends children
the feeling that they deserve it or are entitled to it,
and resort to misbehavior when their demands are not
complied with
In order to avoid unacceptable behavior (like temper
tantrums, abusive behavior, or hitting or biting
behavior) & the accompanying embarrassment in public the
parents resort to indulging children by misusing
rewards. This is bribe & children learn to negotiate &
blackmail.
Negative /unacceptable behavior needs to be met with
consequences (like withholding favorite toys,
privileges, isolating child separating oneself, stop
talking which are meaningful to the child need to be
applied soon after negative behavior & are to be focused
with re-assurances of love and trust.
Rewards of praise are to be used to appreciate good
behavior. Praise him when the he is honest and behaves
well. Encouraging good behavior is the key to effective
discipline. Strike a balance between discipline and
love.
