World Food Day – 16 Oct

The Right to Food is a right of every person since birth. Food, which is one of the basic necessities of life, is deprived to many people. It is due to this reason that in the year 1945, United Nations (UN) declared an entire day to highlight the plight of people who were deprived of this amenity, which came to be known as the World Food Day. World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16th October across all parts of the world. This day helps to create awareness & understanding of the problems and solutions to bring an end to the problem of hunger. It has been observed that over 870 million people around the globe are malnourished. This is an alarming number that must be lowered down with implementation of proper strategies. The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has played a significant role in contributing towards the welfare of masses at large. FAO provides complete account of information on how the cooperatives contribute towards enhancing the level of availability of food. According to a recent study, approximately one in six people around the world, most of who belong to developing countries do not have access to enough food which is required to lead a healthy and active life. It is a major cause of concern as most of the people do not get this basic necessity of life, due to which there are an increased number cases wherein people are suffering due to hunger.

World Food Day is a theme based event which is celebrated in more than 150 countries, including India. The theme for the World Food Day 2013, as decided by the UN is “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition”. The theme highlights the area that needs action to provide a resolution to the situation related to poverty and hunger.

In India, one of the prime institutions responsible for maintain enough stock for the country’s population is the Food Corporation of India (FCI). This entity has been set up to meet the contingency food requirements. Also, through Public Distribution System (PDS), it is ensured that this right trickles down to the lower section of the society.

With the ever growing population, it is the need of the hour to enlighten people not to waste food and realise the fact that this is a basic necessity which must be accessible to one and all.

A lot of schools have taken an initiative to highlight the importance of food and teach students the importance of food in our lives. This topic is highlighted not only through factual data but also through conducting events and competitions.

How to celebrate World Food Day at home?

  • Tell your children the story behind celebrating World Food Day.
  • Together with your children, explore ways to avoid food wastage at home. Teach them how to make dishes using left over food items.
  • Inculcate the habit of sharing food.
  • Donate food to those who need.
  • Create awareness among the masses by making posters and banners with World Food Day slogans.

So, use the above tips to celebrate this day take a pledge not to waste any type of food item(s).
