Mahashivratri | Shivratri | Maha Shivratri Festival 2011 | Happy Shivratri

Maha Shivratri is a festival dedicated to Lord Shiva and is celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day in the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the month of Maagha (as per Shalivahana or Gujarati Vikrama) or Phalguna (as per Vikrama) in the Hindu calendar. The festival is celebrated by offerings of Bael leaves to the Lord Shiva and devotees also observe fasts. Devotees strongly believe that sincere worship of Lord Shiva on the auspicious day of Shivratri absolves a person of sins and liberates him from the cycle of birth and death. People also visit temples and offer pooja of Shivalingam by bathing it with milk, yoghurt and water amidst the chanting of ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ and ringing of temple bells.

Basant Panchami is a Hindu festival and comes mainly in the month of 8th February. The festival is celebrated at the end of the winter, to welcome spring and is dedicated to the Goddess of wisdom and knowledge, Saraswati.

vasant panchami 2011 - Sarasvati puja

The festival marks the beginning of a new life with yellow mustard flowers starting to bloom and nature displaying her majestic best. Thus the color of the festival is yellow and that’s why people wear yellow clothes and consume yellow sweets.

The most interesting feature of Vasant Panchami is kite flying. One can see the blue sky covered with numbers of colorful kites. The festival is celebrated with great vigor especially in educational institutions as the students place their books at the goddess Saraswati feet, thus signifying that the books are being blessed by the goddess.
