Republic day is one of the three national holidays in India. The day holds significance because on 26 January, 1950 our constitution came into force and India was declared a republic state. The day is celebrated with great pomp and show, as a grand parade is held in New Delhi. Prior to the commencement of parade, the Prime Minister lays a floral wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, a memorial to unknown soldiers at the India Gate.

There are also spectacular displays from the different states of the country, depicting their cultures, lifestyles and latest developments. These displays certainly bring to light the culture richness and diversity in India. National Bravery Awards are also given to children for their brave deeds.

The celebrations also include special performances by students and folk dances by tribal people from different states. The day witnesses march past of the regiments of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force and also some unbelievable and breathe taking stunts by these hilarious soldiers.

The day surely gives a rise to the patriotic sentiments of the people and spread an air of joy and unity among masses.

Pongal is one of the most popular harvest festivals of South India, mainly Tamil Nadu. Pongal falls in the mid-January every year and marks the auspicious beginning of Uttarayan – sun’s journey northwards. Pongal festival lasts for four days.

Bhogi Festival (14th Jan, 2011): Bhogi is the first day of Pongal and is celebrated in honor of Lord Indra. On Bhogi, people clean out their homes and the day is meant for domestic activities. Farmers worship the sun and the earth by anointing their ploughs and sickles with sandalwood paste.

Surya Pongal (15th Jan, 2011): The day is dedicated to the Sun God and is offered boiled milk and jaggery.  Rice is cooked and prepared as a dish called Pongal.

Mattu Pongal (16th Jan, 2011): On this day, Lord Ganesh and Goddess Parvati are worshiped and is dedicated to cattle. The cattle are washed and beads, bells and flower garlands are tied around their necks. They are fed with Pongal and devotees pay their respect to cows by offering prayers.

Kaanum Pongal (17th Jan, 2011): The day is dedicated to the Sun god and elaborate powdered chalk designs of the Sun god are drawn. It is very similar to Rakhsha Bandhan and Bhai Dhuj, a festival where women offer prayers for the wellbeing of their brothers.
