Extra Points for Girls in Admissions

Parents of young boys have been left cribbing about the fact that some schools in the Capital are giving extra points to girls in the admission criteria. The reason being floated around is that this is being done to aid the progress of ‘girl’ education. Some co-ed schools seek to increase the ratio of girls because of this reason and are giving away 10 extra points to girl candidates seeking admission. Parents of boys are complaining that such preferences aren’t needed as the social equation has improved drastically. Most of them feel that discrimination against girls isn’t prevalent at least in the urban areas as far as education is concerned.

Security becomes an issue in Schools across India

Delhi Public Schools in Bangalore are on the verge of equipping themselves with metal detectors and raising the boundary walls along with the deployment of ex-army soldiers to beef up their security. Nearly every school in the nation is somehow trying to grapple with the security concerns that have become the most talked about issue across the nation after the Mumbai terror attacks. Some Delhi schools like Sanskriti School in south Delhi had chosen a different approach by conducting security drills after the Delhi blasts. Now, again, the school plans to start conducting drills like emergency evacuation, at least once every month.

The St. Stephen’s School in Chandigarh has placed extra guards at the school gates and planned an emergency evacuation and quick mobilization of staff. Delhi Public School (DPS) Gurgaon, Sector 45 has more tech-savvy and elaborate security plans. They plan to install a satellite-dependent tracking system for its student by making the parents pay for it. The idea may sound very appealing to some but increasing school fees in the name of security provision might just be a bit too much for the already overburdened parents.
